Grilles may be just one small aspect of replacement windows, but the right kind of grilles can add an authentic touch that may be exactly what your traditional home needs. Your replacement window expert, Renewal by Andersen® of Oklahoma, discusses traditional home styles and the grilles that work best with them.
Colonial and Cape Cod
Colonial and Cape Cod architecture, as we know it today, is derived from the designs that early New England settlers brought with them in the early 1700s. Both architectural styles are easily recognizable, thanks to the symmetrical floor plan and almost box-like structure. This symmetry is carried over to the window design, particularly the checkered grille pattern. This grille style has since become associated with the Colonial style, which is why we named one of our standard grille styles after it. In addition to the traditional six-over-six panels, we also offer custom configurations that will fit your design.
Farmhouse homes came into popularity about a century after Colonial architecture, and are known for their front-facing gables and tall structures. Farmhouse windows are taller than they are wide, with a distinctive grille style consisting of a single horizontal bar and one or two vertical bars dividing the upper half. Our custom grille designs let you tweak your Farmhouse-style windows replacement. For instance, you can choose double-hung windows with grilles on the top sash paired with a clear bottom sash. You can also choose a different number of vertical bars, depending on your design requirements.
Mock Tudor-style homes are a modern iteration of Tudor homes, and carry the same distinct elements: stucco siding, exposed timbering and casement windows with closely-spaced diamond-pattern grilles. Traditionally, these windows were made with individual glass panels, which were extremely difficult to keep clean. With Renewal by Andersen replacement windows, you can choose to have removable interior grilles, or have them installed between glass panels. Combined with easy clean hinges that allow easy access to both sides of the sash, keeping your casement windows clean has never been easier.
