Revolutionary Fibrex® material makes up Renewal by Andersen® window frames and sashes. This material combines the strength and stability of wood with the low-maintenance qualities vinyl. 40 percent of the raw material by weight used to make Fibrex came from clean, reclaimed wood. Our windows are ENERGY STAR® qualified and have the Green Seal certification.
Read on to learn more about how Fibrex material is manufactured.
The Manufacturing Process
Every year, Andersen produces millions of windows. The leftover wood from milling intricate profiles in windows are reclaimed and repurposed to create Fibrex. As mentioned, it’s composed of 40 percent wood fiber by weight and 60 percent propriety polymer.
To make sure that the wood fiber is completely dry, it’s heated at a certain temperature. Once it has been dried, the polymer is also heated and then combined with the wood fiber. With enough pressure to the liquid polymer, it encases and fills every cell of the fiber. During the process, the wood fibers align and bend together, allowing Fibrex to have excellent moisture-resistance and durability. Following this, the compound is put into an extruder, so it can be created into any shape and applied with color.
What Makes Fibrex Material Great
Due to its strength of Fibrex, we can make replacement windows with narrower sashes and frames, meaning you’ll get more glass and wider outdoor views. This also means we can make windows in virtually any shape. On the other hand, vinyl frames usually have a higher expansion rate and can bow, which damages the glass seal.
With this material, you won’t have to worry about repainting or scraping as well as decay and mold growth. When combined with Andersen High Performance™ Low-E4® glass, windows with Fibrex frames can help you stay warm in winter and cool in summer. Your heating and cooling system won’t need to work as hard, resulting in energy savings.
